Rants from the lunatic fringe

some furries respond to our article.

Hello,
I’m a rather quiet member of the Carolina Furs Yahoo group, I live in the piedmont area and have attended only one Furry convention, MFM in Memphis. I had a very good time and it was very different for me, dispite being a furry at heart. I recommend going at least once.

I don’t get out to many of the furmeets, as my career doesn’t let me have a lot of free time. So I tend to socialize online, which in turn is how I meet many of my fur friends.

I’m not very Active in Carolina Furs mainly because the members are so spread out. I have a friend in Montreal Canada who is a member of a group called MonFur (Montreal Furries). I think their group is more tightly knit because it is a city-based community rather then a state based community.

Not that either is better or worst [sic], it’s just that furs like me who live in a rural area can’t always attend events.

Dispite that I do enjoy what little envolvement I can be a part of and always like talking to others and making new friends. I like how open minded and accepting the group can be as well.

Just wanted to add my 2 cents.
Thanks,

Hey there!
I just wanted to say thanks for writing that article about the furmeets. My girlfriend just scanned and sent it to me to look at after she almost choked on her pizza after stumbling across it. Mainly wanted to say thanks for presenting “furries/scalies/etc” in a better light than others have. The sterotypes and schemas which have currently been instilled concerning furries does not represent furries as a whole, thats for sure. I don’t have any information concerning furmeets in Boone, but I know for sure that it can be intimidating to participate in one. You really don’t know what to expect, I for one don’t want to get caught with a bunch of people wearing tails around town for the day, or just chilling in a bowling alley with those weird little clip-on ears on my head. People can be very secrative [sic] when it comes to this sort of thing with such a bad reputation placed on the subculture. Half of them can’t explain why they feel the way they do about an “animal” side to their personalities or spiritualism. Its hard to believe one is part of something when they have no proof, it really seems crazy. But thats just the way it is I suppose.

Your best bet to actually find and understand a furmeet is to go to one that is large and has already been established. Smaller gatherings like the one in boone are often the result of people who have reached an internal breaking point; unable to talk to anyone about their “furry” side without being shunned or cast out from normal society, they just want to meet with someone who might understand what they’re going through and be able to relate with. There are more furries out there than you can imagine, they’re [sic] just won’t speak of the subject unless they know the person they’re talking to can be trusted and understanding.

Anyway thanks for the article, even though I’m all the way on the other side of the state, I do appreciate it. Thank you and I hope that helped.
